Mr. Joe Variety Show / Reading is Fun
Joe Sullivan graduated from the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus College for Clowns in 1969 and has been performing his special brand of entertainment ever since. In the Mr. Joe Show, two themes are offered: "Reading is Magic" or "the Science of Toys." "Reading is Magic" offers juggling, magic, puppetry, musical instruments, and other pieces of entertainment that Joe learned over the years by reading books. Joe explains to the children that everything he does in his show can be learned by simply picking up a book at the library. Mr. Joe demonstrates how to make a puppet, how to juggle, how to make their own musical instrument in a fun-filled 50 minute program designed to entertain an entire audience. "Reading is Magic" is designed to motivate the children to look at a book from a whole new perspective.
The Science of Toys
In "the Science of Toys" show, Mr. Joe talks about what science is and how toys help a child make scientific discoveries through the toy. Each toy has two functions: to entertain and to educate. Science means knowledge and when a child picks up a new toy, all kinds of fun discovery opportunities introduce themselves. A ball is a toy. How about a book? Do you think it is a toy? Mr. Joe will discuss with the children why a book is as much a toy as the ball is. With the assistance of a book, a child can learn to make his own toy. Puppets, juggling, and musical instruments are used as background props to help the children discover new ways of making or doing things with toys in their environment. This is a fun 50 minute show.
